Imagery In Othello :: essays research papers

The function of imagery in the mid-sixteenth century play Othello by William Shakespeare is to aid characterisation and define meaning in the play. The antagonist Iago is defined through many different images, Some being the use of poison and soporifics, sleeping agents, to show his true evil and sadistic nature. Othello’s character is also shaped by much imagery such as the animalistic, black and white, and horse images which indicates his lustful, sexual nature. Characterisation of women is heavily dictated by imagery used to show the patriarchal gender system of the time. Some of this imagery is that of hobbyhorses and the like showing that they, Desdemona and Emelia, were nothing better than common whores. Othello’s view at the start of the play is contradicting of these patriarchal views with Desdemona and Othellos’ true love overcoming these stereotypes and we are told this through imagery of fair warriors and the like. The power of deceit is shown also th rough imagery of spiders and webs, uniforms and other such images. Also the power of jealousy is well defined by imagery. The handkerchief, green-eyed monster and cuckolding imagery are prominent in defining this theme. The satanic character of Iago is depicted well though different types or imagery. His sadist intend is depicted through suffocating imagery â€Å"I’ll pour pestilence into his(Othello’s) ear† (II iii 356) says Iago in a soliloquy in as he is outlining his malicious intent and nature. This continues throughout the play with lines such as â€Å"The Moor already changes with my poison† (III iii 322) and â€Å"Not poppy nor mandragora, | Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world shall medicine thee to that sweet sleep | Which thou did owdest yesterday† (III iii 327-30). His malicious character is likened to a snake through this imagery of poisons like a snake has and then Lodovico calls him a â€Å"Viper† (V ii 281) which indicates how Iago’s character is that of a snake, and in those times a snake was considered a creature of pure evil. The Machiavellian persona of Iago can also be seen through his use of reputation imagery to Cassio and Oth ello. To Cassio he says â€Å"Reputation is an idle and most false imposition† (II iii 267-8) and as a paradox, to Othello, he says reputation is everything to a man and he is nothing with out it. Iago is also likened very much, though imagery, to the Devil.

Sea Pollution The pollution of the ocean is rapidly becoming a crucial problem on Earth. The major causes of sea pollution are oil spills, toxic waste, and dumping of other harmful materials into the ocean. This pollution will directly affect the living organisms in the ocean and indirectly affect human’s health and resources. We, as humans, should learn more about these in order to have the knowledge on how to solve this problem effectively. Oil spill is perhaps the most publicly acknowledged cause of sea pollution.Large tanker accident like the Exxon Valdez had been rapidly known worldwide. This incident happened in Prince William Sound, Alaska in March 1989, where the Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker, grounded on Bligh Reef, spilling almost 11 million gallons of crude oil. It is considered as one of the most devastating human-caused environmental tragedy. Plenty of people didn’t realize that hundreds of millions of gallons of oil are quietly end up in our oceans by other sources such as routine shipping, run-offs, and dumping every year.Toxic wastes are poisonous chemical and biological materials that are produced from industrial plants or facilities and agricultural work that are carried away through freshwater and into the rivers, lakes, and ocean. These dangerous pollutants include chemical contaminants such as Lead, Mercury, Asbestos, Sulphur, Nitrates, etc. , and biological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, etc. Dumping of litter into the ocean can cause huge problems to the marine life. The ocean is a virtual dumping ground for rubbish.That garbage includes scrap fish nets, plastic bags, tin cans, glass or plastic bottles etc. Sea pollution will cause different harmful effects on the wildlife. For example, oil spills frequently the kill marine lives and further cause extinctions. Blow holes of the whales and dolphins will be clogged by the oil, making them very difficult to breathe and communicate regularly. And the fur of the otters, seals and penguin will be coasted by a thick layer of oil, leaving them exposed to hypothermia.When oil floats on the water, this will block the sunlight from the photosynthetic aquatic plants. Sea pollution is also harmful to human’s health. Although it may not directly and immediately affect human’s health, it can damage our health after a long term of exposure. For instance, industrial waste is one of the dangerous pollutants which are extremely harmful to human’s health. Chemical properties such as Mercury and Lead are consumed by human indirectly from consuming fishes that have been caught from the polluted ocean.And Lead is dangerous to our health, especially children’s and pregnant women’s as it accumulates in the body and will affect the central nervous system. There are many ways that ocean pollution can be prevented or controlled. A lot of people are unaware that huge portion of the pollution problem can be tracked right back to t heir own backyards and homes. Therefore, sea pollution can be prevented by keeping to some simple guidelines in our daily life. For example, be aware of what we throw down the sink or toilet.Solvent litter like paints or oil should not be thrown down the drain as it will slowly flow to the ocean through the streams and rivers. And of course the most basic way to prevent sea pollution is to avoid throwing rubbish into the rivers, lakes and oceans. One of the other ways to control sea pollution is through industrial water treatment. In order to release sewage back into the environment safely, the raw sewage must first be treated correctly in a water treatment plant.In the water treatment plant, the sewage will go through a few phases, which includes a numbers of chambers and chemical processes, to filter, degrade and get rid of any left-over impurities in order to minimize the toxicity level and amount of the waste. â€Å"Prevention is better than cure. † It is not just the gov ernment’s responsibility, but is every individual’s responsibility to put in effort to help control and prevent the pollution of the ocean. This is a very important task to protect and improve the quality of the environment for our future generations.

Malcolm X was a prominent figure in the Nation of Islam who advocated for black nationalism and separatism. The man who became one of America’s most powerful voices for African Americans was deeply affected by the terrors of racism, which shaped his view of social justice and the condemnation of the white man. The way Malcolm X narrates his experiences changes as his views on race change. At first, he wants readers to feel the destructiveness of racism, so he conveys his experiences through provocative language. This is one of many instances that illustrates the white society’s â€Å"lack of mercy and compassion† (22). Malcolm X blames whites for robbing his mothe r’s dignity, for separating his siblings, and for â€Å"disintegrating† his home and unity. Therefore, Malcolm X states he has no compassion for â€Å"a white society that will crush people† (22). The word â€Å"crushed† imparts the same horror he feels on the audience to illuminate the extremity of racism so that the audience can sympathize with his reasoned anger. Being called the ‘n-word’ in his life is another factor in Malcolm X’s belief that white society is demeaning to blacks. The teacher’s statement is a clear portrayal of the widely accepted sentiment in that time period that African Americans are too incompetent to have good jobs and have ambitions. The different UK legislations like the Care and Support Law, Family Law and public Health, The Criminal law statutes and the Childrens Law are made applicable in the four different scenarios presented within the case study. Scenario 1: Toby is disabled by arthritis and is thus entitled to receive benefits. In the case, the General physician treated Toby without any care and diligence and Tobys benefits were reduced. As per the Care Act 2010, UK, the care provider that is the general physician should provide diligent care and be attentive to the needs of Toby (Nhs.uk, 2015). Further, as per the Equality Act 2010, Toby has the right to be treated with equal respect at workplace and at any social occasions. Thus, as per the provisions of both Care Act and Equality Act, Toby can file a legal suit against the doctor for unfair treatment at the clinic (Maclean, 2012). Scenario 2: In this case John, the elder son of Toby has opposed Tobys wish of a second marriage as he is not comfortable with the new bride. In this case, however as per the regulations of the Marriage Act 1753, any individual above the age of 16 years can marry as per their personal wish without any parental or any other consent. In this regard, both the Marriage Act 1753 and the Civil Partnership Act both sets the rules that only under the following conditions the marriage may be restricted namely: If the individuals are already married or are in a civil partnership If the individuals engaging in the act of marriage are under the age of 16 years If the individuals engaging in the act of marriage are close relatives of one another If the individuals are incapable mentally of understanding the importance and nature of marriage ceremony Since, in this case, none of the above facts are present hence consent of the child is not a restraining factor for the marriage (Family-law-advice.org, 2015). In the first scenario it is seen that the doctor has breached the conditions of the Care Act 2010 and Equity Act 2010. In the second case, it can be confirmed that the marriage of Toby is possible under the Marriage act 1753 and in the third case it can be suggested that John can claim for defenses under the provisions of the Mental Capacity act 2005. Finally, in the third case it is seen that under the provisions of the Childrens Act 2004, the school staffs of Dot has reasonably attended to her injuries.
